The most sought after salmon in Alaska is the King or Chinook salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). The Chinook is the Alaskan state fish. These fish average 20-30 pounds with some weighing as much as 70 pounds. The Deshka River and Willow Creek fisheries provide ample opportunities to catch that 'trophy' fish from late May through early July.
In mid July, the Silver or Coho salmon ( Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum) start their run. They are the true acrobats in the salmon family. They average 8 to 12 pounds in size and can really put a smile on your face when they strike a fly or glob of eggs on light tackle and then 'tail walk' across the river or jump several feet out of the water.
By mid July two species of salmon, the Pink or 'Humpy' ( Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and the Chum or 'dog' ( Oncorhynchus keta) salmon are also arrive in the river. These fish are also excellent fighting fish on light tackle with some of the larger Chum salmon weighing as much as 18 pounds.
Fishing for large Rainbow trout on light tackle in the late spring or late summer can test your fishing skills! The Deshka River and Willow Creek (a trophy trout stream) offer an outstanding supply of great fighting fish all summer long. While the salmon are running, Rainbow trout are catch and release only and catch and release only in Willow Creek all year round.
